SMETANA Má Vlast: Vltava
ELGAR Cello Concerto
DVOŘÁK Symphony No.8
Jiří Rožeň Conductor
Laura van der Heijden Cello
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
The mysteries of a Bohemian fairytale unfold with playful dancing flutes and gentle strings in Vltava; a short symphonic poem from Smetana’s mighty Má Vlast (my country). This evocative piece is followed by Elgar’s sublime Cello Concerto; a staple of Classic FM’s Hall of Fame, and it is easy to understand why. The beautifully stark opening of the Concerto sets the tone of the music, soulfully communicating the passion and anguish of the human condition in a way that no words can.
The concert concludes with Dvořák's exhilarating and theatrical Symphony No.8, which creatively mixes traditional folk rhythms with thunderstorms of brass and timpani. The gentle waltz of the last movement gives way to an energetic finale, calling us to the dance!
