Young musicians from across the Humber region gathered from 7 to 9 April 2025 at the Albemarle Music Centre in Hull for an unforgettable experience with the HEROS Orchestra. This initiative, created by Hull Music Service and delivered in partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Resound team, provided an incredible opportunity for local young people to take part in an orchestral music project, working alongside musicians from the RPO.

Led by conductor Patrick Bailey, the project was supported by staff from Hull Music Service and other music hub teams from across the region, alongside RPO musicians. Participants from Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, and North East Lincolnshire took part in side-by-side rehearsals, full orchestra sessions, and sectionals led by RPO players, who also hosted a Q&A session to share insights into their professional journeys and experiences.
A key highlight was the opportunity to attend an RPO concert at Hull City Hall on Tuesday 8 April, which for many participants was their first live experience of an RPO performance, deepening their connection to orchestral music. On the final day, the HEROS Orchestra performed at Hull Minster on Wednesday 9 April, showcasing their hard work and dedication to friends, family, and the local community.
The HEROS Orchestra aims to make orchestral music more accessible, with the project offered free of charge to ensure young musicians from all backgrounds can participate. With feedback such as "I feel like I can actually play without fear" and "I was inspired to join a professional orchestra", it's clear the residency had a lasting impact, boosting participants' confidence and inspiring future musical ambitions.
