The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s (RPO) mission is to place orchestral music at the heart of contemporary society and to ensure that live orchestral music is accessible to as inclusive and diverse an audience as possible. As part of this commitment, the Orchestra enjoys four key residencies outside of London and is proud to be Resident Orchestra in Hull.
Following the success of earlier performances, the RPO began its residency in the city of Hull in 2014, and over the years since, thousands of people from all backgrounds and ages have been introduced to and shared in the joy of orchestral music. The Orchestra enjoys an annual season of concerts as part of the Hull City Hall Classics series and reaches beyond the concert hall through a range of initiatives, from Meet the Musicians sessions, open rehearsals and pre-concert talks to the award-winning STROKESTRA® programme (a collaboration between the RPO and Hull Integrated Community Stroke Service) which has pioneered the use of group creative music-making to drive patient-led recovery in stroke sufferers. The RPO also enjoys a partnership with the University of Hull, providing students with opportunities to further develop their skills and broaden their experiences of the music industry.
The current season of concerts at Hull City Hall features performances from Music Director Vasily Petrenko, Elizabeth Watts, Nil Venditti, Andrew Byun and Clara Jumi-Kang, amongst others, with music ranging from a Last Night of the Proms-themed programme to Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, Sibelius’ Symphony No.2, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto and Hisaishi’s Encounter for String Orchestra.
