The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) Resound team was thrilled to take part in an exciting day of learning and fun at Thorpe Park, as part of ACS International Schools’ STEAM Day, celebrating science, technology, engineering, arts and maths. It offered young people the chance to learn about a variety of topics through interactive experiences. After taking part in learning activities, participants collected stamps that could be redeemed to enjoy their favourite rides at Thorpe Park.

To begin the day, a brass quintet welcomed participants into the park with upbeat classics including Puttin’ on the Ritz. The lively performance created a joyful atmosphere and had the crowd clapping in appreciation.

On the main stage, our popular ‘Conduct the Orchestra’ sessions introduced the audience to different sections of the Orchestra, before young people were invited onto the stage. Participants enjoyed taking control of the conductor’s baton, with the help of conductor Pete Harrison, and experimented with the speed and dynamics of the Orchestra before finishing their performance with a proud bow!

Throughout the day, we offered an ‘Instrument Petting Zoo’. Our musicians, dressed in suitably safari themed outfits, guided small groups to try a range of instruments. From strings to percussion, participants were able to engage with the instruments hands-on. Our petting zoo remained busy all day with a constant flow of eager participants.
As students explored the park, they encountered our roaming musicians at various jam spots. These areas encouraged participants to take part in ‘Jam with the RPO’ with interactive easy-to-play instruments such as maracas and tambourines. The inclusivity of these sessions created joyful moments of inspiration and connection throughout the day.

Whether conducting, listening, playing or jamming, each young person had the chance to experience the joy of music-making with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Through interactive workshops, the RPO Resound team supported ACS International Schools and made music a memorable part of the day at Thorpe Park.
