Prokofiev’s radiantly lyrical First Symphony opens the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s autumn concert at Cheltenham Town Hall.

The centrepiece of the evening is one of the most challenging concertos in the entire piano repertoire – Tchaikovsky’s mighty Piano Concerto No.1, performed tonight by Finghin Collins. This sparkling Russian gem blends Ukrainian folk themes, French song and a grand opening tune to triumphant effect and in 1958 became the first piece of classical music to sell over 1 million copies.

Dvořák’s Symphony No.7 perfectly balances dramatic power and irresistible exuberance. With its arresting opening, gorgeous slow movement, dancing Scherzo and thrilling Finale, this is one of the greatest pieces Dvořák ever wrote.
