MENDELSSOHN Hebrides Overture (‘Fingal’s Cave’)
MOZART Clarinet Concerto
ELGAR ‘Enigma’ Variations
Jamie Phillips Conductor
Katherine Lacy Clarinet
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Opening this concert will be Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, which conjures the sights and sounds of Scottish scenery, from calm still waters to intense and dramatic storms. Moving from the Highlands to Nordic plains, Sibelius’ symphonic poem Finlandia opens with snarling brass and thunderous timpani, building to its stirring climax brimming with drama.
The RPO's Principal Clarinet, Katherine Lacy, takes centre stage to perform Mozart’s ever-popular and charming Clarinet Concerto. Having recently been placed at No.7 in Classic FM’s Ultimate Hall of Fame, this piece brings together expressive and cheeky melodies, making it a fun piece for everyone. Elgar’s ever popular and quintessentially English ‘Enigma’ Variations provides a fantastic finish to this performance. A landmark piece not just for Elgar, but for British music, Elgar wrote his Variations in dedication to a number of dear friends, with one theme left unnamed, adding to the work’s mystery and intrigue.
