MENDELSSOHN Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave)

BRUCH Violin Concerto No.1

BEETHOVEN Symphony No.4

Alpesh Chauhan is the rising star and Principal Conductor of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Italy. Following a recent concert in the UK, The Times praised a “magnificently taut and sometimes terrifying account of the score directed by the superb Alpesh Chauhan”.
Joining him on stage is young, Jamaican violinist Ellinor D’Melon, who has a string of first prize wins under her belt including the ‘Debut Berlin’ international competition and the “Virtuoso Award” at the Manhattan International Competition.

The mysteries of a lonely cave in the far corner of Scotland are revealed in the first piece of tonight’s concert. Listen out for the low tones in the music that evoke the ebb and flow of the waves inside the cave, alongside the dramatic crashes of stormy tides. A highlight of this evening is Bruch’s passionate Concerto No.1. This piece unleashes the full spectrum of the instrument and to this day is one of the most popular works in the violin repertoire.
The evening continues with Beethoven’s enchanting Symphony No.4. You may recognise the impish second movement which was used to great effect in the 2016 fantasy film A Cure for Wellness.
