BORODIN Overture: Prince Igor

RACHMANINOV Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Pablo Gonzalez* Conductor
Tom Poster Piano

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra presents a sparkling evening of Russian gems. The concert opens with the Overture to Borodin’s much-loved opera Prince Igor, followed by a journey of discovery with Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini; a piece that infuses rich romantic harmonies, plainchant melodies and dynamic rhythms, this work is regarded as one of the Romantic period’s greatest works. What began as one of Tchaikovsky’s most difficult compositions subsequently became one of his most well-known, as the concert concludes with his magnificent masterpiece, Symphony No.5.

FREE: Pre-concert talk at 6:30pm

*Jessica Cottis who had previously been advertised as the guest conductor has withdrawn from this concert due to illness, we are grateful to Pablo Gonzalez for agreeing to step in at short notice.
