Xian Zhang Conductor
Fatma Said Soprano

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Known as a conductor of energy, insight, and open-hearted enthusiasm, Xian Zhang leads the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time in a season opener that will thrill and delight.

Composed under political pressure from Stalin’s regime, Shostakovich’s towering Fifth Symphony is as angry and compelling as it is bold, bitter and heartfelt. Before the interval, the orchestra is joined by glorious Egyptian soprano Fatma Said for a selection of Strauss songs celebrating life and love.

The Birmingham Classical 2018/19 Season welcomes a variety of astounding young and multi-cultural artists. This season’s distinctive programme boasts internationally renowned orchestras, recitals and chamber concerts featuring some of the world’s biggest classical music stars.
