Concert launches three-day Kilburn Music Mile Festival
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) will make history this November when it performs the first concert at the iconic Gaumont State Cinema in nearly five decades, as part of the three-day Kilburn Music Mile Festival.
Taking place on Thursday 6 November at 7.30pm, the concert will open the festival – a celebration of music, culture and community along Kilburn High Road from 6–7 November.
Conducted by Ben Pope, with celebrated vocalists Anna-Jane Casey and Iain Mackenzie, the RPO will perform a vibrant programme marking 50 years of Kilburn’s rich musical heritage. The audience will be treated to an iconic repertoire including hits from Queen, The Beatles, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones, alongside timeless favourites such as My Way and Fly Me to the Moon.
Opened in 1937, the Gaumont State Cinema is a British Art Deco landmark that once hosted Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Shirley Bassey, The Rolling Stones and Tom Jones. The RPO concert will be the first major live performance at the venue since 1978, offering a rare opportunity to experience live orchestral music in one of London’s most iconic settings.
Sarah Bardwell, Managing Director of the RPO, said: “It’s a real privilege for the Orchestra to perform at the Gaumont State Cinema — a venue that holds such an important place in London’s musical history. Bringing live orchestral music to a stage that has been silent for so long is a special moment, both for Kilburn and for everyone involved. The concert will also be the RPO’s first performance in Brent since relocating its HQ to Wembley Park at the beginning of October, so a double celebration. This concert is about reconnecting with the area’s rich musical heritage and sharing that sense of occasion with the community.”
