A phenomenally gifted pianist in his own right, Beethoven wrote five distinguished piano concertos, all popular concert pieces that display a wealth of power and originality. Paul Lewis, critically acclaimed for his interpretations of Beethoven, performs his noble Piano Concerto No.1, with its exquisite, flowing slow movement and vivacious Rondo finale.

Although Tchaikovsky destroyed the full manuscript of the opera, his Overture to The Voyevoda is a lively and, at times, dramatic opener, conjuring images of the Volga river. Completing this concert, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is one of the great Romantic symphonies. Offering a profound insight into the composer’s tumultuous emotional history, a recurring Fate theme appears throughout the symphony in different guises and rich orchestral colours, moving from darkness to a triumphant conclusion.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Mrs Aline Foriel-Destezet.

Please note, this concert replaces the previously advertised performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.3. The Mahler programme will now be performed on Thursday 27 April 2023, 7.30pm. Click here for more information. All existing ticket holders have been contacted.
