Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major combines vibrant and heartfelt melodies with a fire and ferocity that have guaranteed it an enduring appeal with concert audiences. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be joined by young Russian virtuoso violinist Sergei Dogadin, a captivating performer who recently won First Prize and a Gold Medal at the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
Beethoven’s Hungarian-flavoured Overture to King Stephen is a fascinating gem that complements his immortal Fifth Symphony, which must surely have one of the most iconic openings in all orchestral music. Its powerful opening motif, described as ‘fate knocking at the door’, dominates the whole work, with a calm Andante and stirring Scherzo moving through to a glorious finale.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Mrs Aline Foriel-Destezet.
Please note, this concert replaces the previously advertised performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.2, ‘Resurrection’. The Mahler programme will now be performed on Wednesday 8 March 2023, 7.30pm. Click here for more information. All existing ticket holders have been contacted.
