About Jeremy Houghton

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is excited to announce Jeremy Houghton as its Visual Artist-in-Residence for its landmark 80th anniversary year.

Renowned for capturing behind-the-scenes glimpses through exclusive residencies, Jeremy has been documenting extraordinary communities for more than two decades, from Windsor Castle to the Olympic Games. His 2026 residency with the RPO will see him go behind the scenes to observe, sketch and paint the Orchestra, creating a unique body of work that will reveal rarely seen moments.

This body of work featuring the RPO will be exhibited later in the year and made available for sale, with a percentage of the proceeds being donated to the Orchestra.

Jeremy Houghton (b.1974) is an artist in residence who has been invited to paint at some of the world’s most extraordinary places. With rare behind-the-scenes access, he reveals what others seldom see. His two-decade residencies span royal, military and sporting communities, from Windsor Castle for HM Queen Elizabeth II, to Wimbledon, the Vatican and the London 2012 Olympics. Working in tonal, reduced palettes, he explores movement and nostalgia, painting untold stories that challenge perception and reveal hidden realities.

Jeremy sketches our musicians

This May at the Royal Festival Hall, he sat down with RPO horn player Zoë Tweed and Sub-Principal Bassoon Ruby Collins to sketch them as they discuss topics ranging from the Orchestra's recent tours, their journeys with and relationship to their instruments, and how they each can shape and blend different tones and colours in their respective mediums.

In creating collection of paintings to commemorate the Orchestra's 80th Anniversary, our Visual Artist-in-Residence Jeremy Houghton has explored the colour and physicality of orchestral music and the spaces it fills, embodying the acts of performing and listening in paint.

“I'll look for commonalities between the music and my work... harmony, tension, balance, contrast.”

“This body of work has constantly thrown up new challenges for me, which, as an artist, that's exactly what you want, because you want to be taken out of your comfort zone.”
