RPO Preludes: Prokofiev and Berio
Fri 16 Jun 2017
Need to know
Repertoire
- Prokofiev Quintet in G Minor, Op.39
- Berio Sequenza v for Solo Trombone
Features
- Members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Prokofiev's excitingly unpredictable piece combines spiky, energetic passages with lyrical lines and makes original use of an unusual combination of instruments. One of Prokofiev’s most radical scores, the Quintet was initially written as music for the ballet Trapeze, which required a small number of forces and a circus setting. This work will appropriately be followed by Berio’s Sequenza V, which is written for solo trombone and involves the performer dressing up as a clown. According to the composer, the piece can be considered ‘an essay in the superimposition of musical gestures and actions’. It involves some intriguing and virtuosic techniques and will be performed by the RPO’s Principal Trombone, Matthew Gee.
