Barry Wordsworth conducts Swan Lake Suite

Brimming with drama and breathtaking beauty, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake Suite is the first of the composers three great ballets. Ranging from the sweeping romance of the waltz to the imposing and stirring finale, this will be a highlight of Guildford's 2016–17 Classical Season.

This concert will open with Sibelius’ beautifully pictorial Karelia Suite. Filled with character and nationalistic pride this piece was inspired by the folk music of the area Sibelius held dear to his heart. Following this will be Rachmaninov’s First Piano Concerto which he composed when he was only twenty, launching him as a global figure of immeasurable talent. Opening with an extroverted brass fanfare, this Concerto continues with musical acrobatics to challenge the pianist and delight the listener.
