Opening this concert will be Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, which conjures the sights and sounds of Scottish scenery, from calm still waters to intense and dramatic storms. From the Highlands to Polish plains, joining the Orchestra for a performance of Chopin’s astonishing Second Piano Concerto is Janina Fialkowska, ‘a musician of extraordinary sensibility and captivating, artless purity’ (The Telegraph). Chopin’s Concerto is sure to delight as this dramatic work ends in a playful yet dazzlingly brilliant finale.

Elgar’s ever popular and quintessentially English ‘Enigma’ Variations provides a fantastic finish to this performance. A landmark piece not just for Elgar, but for British music, Elgar wrote his Variations in dedication to a number of dear friends, with one theme left unnamed, adding to the work’s mystery and charm.
