The legend that the violin virtuoso Paganini sold his soul to the devil in order to become obscenely talented has inspired numerous composers including Brahms and Andrew Lloyd Webber, but one of the finest variations of the theme is considered to be Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Performed by the supremely talented Alexandra Dariescu, this piece ranges from ghostly stirrings to demonic marches; soft light-heartedness to scintillating wit.
This concert opens with Sibelius’ beautifully pictorial Karelia Suite. Filled with character and nationalistic pride, this piece was inspired by the folk music of the area Sibelius held dear to his heart.
The highlight of the evening will be Beethoven’s Symphony No.3, ‘Eroica’, the first great symphony to have captured the Romantic imagination. With the breathtaking sweep of the opening movement being counter balanced by a vast funeral march of nerve shredding intensity, this piece truly embodies a heroic spirit.
