Writing masterpieces from opposite sides of the world, the four Russian and American composers featured on tonight’s programme were inspired by the two great cities, Paris and New York and are among the most celebrated of the twentieth Century.

Although each of these composers writing in the 1920s is known for their distinct styles, their music has one unifying characteristic in common: thrilling, irresistible rhythm. Prokofiev’s fiendishly difficult Piano Concerto No.3 reaches heights of almost frightening brilliance, juxtaposed against earthy lyricism, while Gershwin’s American in Paris bursts with enthusiasm and excitement. The concert closes with an homage to the bright lights of Broadway with Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Associate Conductor, Alexander Shelley, leads a programme that balances the driving intensity and playful comedy for which these cities are known.
