Full of mythical themes, Weber’s opera Oberon dreamily unfolds with a ‘magic horn call’ to spark the imagination and open the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2015-16 season at Fairfield Halls.

The centrepiece of tonight’s programme is without doubt one of the most popular works ever written for the piano – Grieg’s Piano Concerto. Its dramatic opening leads into rich lyrical melodies and passages of show-stopping virtuosity; it will be brought to life by the winner of the 2014 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, the young virtuoso Taek Gi Le.

Closing this opening concert is Beethoven’s delightful Symphony No.6, known as the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony for its irresistible depictions of the charms of country life.
