350 years after the English Naval victory at the Battle of Lowestoft, join the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as they celebrate all things nautical!

Led by popular English conductor Nicholas Cleobury, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs rousing renditions of the Overtures to Gilbert and Sullivan favourites The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore.

Up-beat and jovial tributes to Naval history continue with music from Vaughan Williams’ Sea Songs, Elgar’s Sea Pictures and Coates’ By the Sleepy Lagoon, which invokes the tranquil peace of being by the sea. This theme continues with Binge’s Sailing By, which is noted for being played every night on BBC Radio 4 before the late Shipping Forecast.

Closing the concert is English composer Henry Wood’s tribute to the sea shanties of the Victorian era; from fast paced jigs to the calm before the storm.
