TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No.1

SIBELIUS Symphony No.5

Alexander Shelley Conductor
Teo Gheorghiu Piano

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by its Principal Associate Conductor Alexander Shelley for a stirring concert in Crawley. Opening will be excerpts from Mendelssohn’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s magical A Midsummer Night’s Dream, including the peaceful Nocturne.

The centrepiece of the evening will be one of the most challenging concertos in the entire piano repertoire – Tchaikovsky’s mighty Piano Concerto No.1, performed by Teo Gheorghiu. This sparkling Russian gem blends together Ukrainian folk themes, French song and a grand opening tune to triumphant effect and in 1958 actually became the first piece of classical music to sell over 1 million copies.

Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony opens with a radiant horn call that creates an atmosphere of mysterious beauty which keeps the listener in its mighty grip through this powerful piece.
