Popular pianist Tom Poster ‘a musician of real subtlety and searching instincts’ (Big Issue), joins the orchestra for a performance of Mozart’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No.21. One of Mozart’s sunniest compositions, the Concerto combines a comic-opera jollity with darker shadows to create exquisite melodies.
Led by Spanish maestro Eduardo Portal, the Orchestra will open the concert with the Overture to Mozart’s spirited operatic masterpiece, The Marriage of Figaro. Audiences will be able to hear Mahler’s outstanding fourth movement to his Fifth Symphony, which is often romantically thought to represent a love letter to his wife, Alma.
With its long, expressive lines and elegiac mood, Barber’s Adagio for Strings has been described as the American anthem of mourning having been played at the funerals of many notable figures. Closing the concert will be Beethoven’s stirring Symphony No.7; a wonderful blend of orchestral gravitas and swelling tunes which is recognisable from the film The King’s Speech.
