Born in Bonn, Dirk Joeres studied conducting and piano in Berlin, Cologne and London, and composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, the grande dame of twentieth-century musical life. Winning first prize at the International Piano Competition in Vercelli (1972), touring extensively and appearing at international festivals (including Berlin and Prague Spring), Dirk Joeres initially established a very successful career as a pianist, before extending into conducting. In 1987 he was appointed Artistic Director of the West German Sinfonia. On the occasion of their début at the Großen Festspielhaus in Salzburg, the press wrote: ‘the orchestra is superbly grounded in technical discipline and tonal balance. Joeres belongs to those conductors who certainly know how to make music speak.’
Dirk Joeres’ relationship with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra spans nearly a decade. In 2007 the RPO appointed him as their Permanent Guest Conductor. Their next European tour is scheduled for December 2008, with appearances at major venues such as Cologne (Philharmonie), Düsseldorf (Tonhalle), Graz (Musikverein), Nürnberg (Meistersingerhalle) and Munich (Philharmonie). Dirk Joeres appears regularly with both the RPO and the West German Sinfonia at international festivals (including Beethovenfest Bonn, Bratislava, Budapest, Cheltenham, Brucknerfest in Linz and Schleswig-Holstein) and on tours across Europe and the USA.
In 2008 the Brnó Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the leading Czech orchestras, unanimously elected Dirk Joeres as their Permanent Guest Conductor. Their first tour, scheduled for autumn 2009, will take them to Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany; a new CD with works by Antonín Dvorák will be released to coincide with this.
Dirk Joeres’ recordings with the West German Sinfonia and the RPO have received excellent reviews in the international press; Gramophone magazine awarded their ‘Critic’s Choice’ for one of his Brahms recordings: ‘superb playing and warm, thoughtful and perceptive performances.’ His most recent Schumann CD with the RPO received rave reviews in the international press and a Supersonic Award: ‘Exemplary - a reference recording’ (Pizzicato); ‘An exultant reading – one of the best recordings’ (Musicweb International).
Dirk Joeres’ many-facetted interests are reflected in the new concepts he has created, exploring new ways to present classical music. In 2002 he initiated an innovative interdisciplinary festival: ‘Dreiklang’ links music, literature and philosophy in a novel way and takes place annually as part of the ‘Kultursommer’ in Rheinland-Pfalz. For the West German Sinfonia’s concert series in Leverkusen he developed an original concept called ‘KlassikSonntag!’ in which he combines an introductory matinée (playing together with members of the orchestra and talking about the works and their historical context), with a public rehearsal and a concert, aiming at a more profound, holistic musical experience.
