The Royal Festival Hall stands at the heart of Southbank Centre complex. Opened in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain, the Hall is one of the world’s leading performance venues. As well as the auditorium, the building consists of The Ballroom, Southbank Centre Shop, several places to eat and drink, and the Saison Poetry Library.
The venue reopened in June 2007 after an extensive two-year refurbishment. As the building is Grade I listed, many of the original 1950s characteristics have been preserved. In addition to this, areas have been enhanced with work done to improve the stage, acoustics and interiors, as well as a wealth of work on the foyer areas.
