Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's RPO resound team awarded £500,000 for new education projects
10 November 2009
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s (RPO) education team RPO resound, in partnership with Hertfordshire Music Service and Northamptonshire County Council has just been awarded £500,000 to implement and oversee significant projects working with young people within their respective communities. Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and in partnership with Orchestras Live, the RPO resound team will be targeting more than 4,000 young people over a period of one year.
Individually branded as COUNT US IN (Hertfordshire) and CONNECTED TO MUSIC (Northamptonshire), the aim is to deliver over 400 workshops focusing on stimulating the ‘music learning experience’, linked with and supported by local music staff, Secondary Heads of Music and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The projects began in October 2009 and will run until September 2010. By the end of this period, 10 districts across the two counties and a total of 20 schools will have benefited from the chance of working alongside professional musicians and having access to a wide range of high quality music.

In conjunction with these projects, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will undertake a series of concerts within the regions, offering children the opportunity to experience live the sound of a full symphony orchestra. The first concert will take place at Berkhamsted School on 5th February 2010 with the aim being to combine the live orchestral experience with the learning experiences gained within the classroom.

James Hutchinson, Head of RPO resound says “We are delighted to receive this support from the DCSF, which will enable us to extend the depth and quality of music provision to young people across Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire. RPO resound is recognised for its artistic work through a vibrant and innovative community and education programme, and we are happy to extend our work to these areas.”

Ian Maclay, Managing Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra says “Specially trained members of the Orchestra, alongside accomplished project leaders, will be providing comprehensive workshops whereby music performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be used as a powerful and inspirational force. Having the Orchestra involved in such projects is paramount to our future”.
