MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto in E minor

SCHUMANN Symphony No.3, 'Rhenish'

Britten's introduction to the orchestra has thrilled audiences young and old over the years with his familiar use of Purcell's grand theme, presented characteristically by each instrument of the orchestra from piccolo to percussion. Equally popular is Mendelssohn's virtuosic Concerto, with its swift and luscious melodies that require great dexterity from the soloist. Schumann's 'Rhenish' Symphony acts as something of a musical journey, portraying scenes from along the River Rhine including the imposing skyline of Cologne with its towering Cathedral.
