SIBELIUS Finlandia
RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No.2
DVORAK Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the Ipswich Regent Theatre with a programme of ever-popular classical masterpieces. Joined on stage by acclaimed British conductor Barry Wordsworth and talented pianist Leon McCawley, the programme begins with Sibelius’ atmospheric Finlandia. Rachmaninov’s much-loved Second Piano Concerto combines superb writing with rich romantic melodies. Its emotional Adagio theme remains forever associated with the classic film, Brief Encounter. Dvorak’s celebrated ‘New World’ Symphony makes for a dramatic finale to this concert. Described as the composer’s own musical ‘letter from America’, it is a work full of Slavonic fire and heartfelt expression.
