SHOSTAKOVICH Festive Overture Op.96

TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No.1

SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No.5

It is generally agreed that Dmitri Shostakovich is one of the titans of 20th-century music and certainly the greatest symphonist of his time. The depth and range of his music is truly Beethovenian and we are very fortunate to have the composer’s son, Maxim Shostakovich, visiting The Hexagon to conduct the colossal Symphony No.5. The depth of the orchestration, the elemental rhythmic patterns and the sheer range of the musical architecture will be revealed in this performance.

In the first half, Tchaikovsky’s ever popular First Piano Concerto will be performed by hugely talented young Russian pianist, Natasha Paremski.

FREE pre-concert talk from 6.15pm-7.00pm in the Kennet Room, Civic Offices.

This concert is part of the 'Classical Music Alive in Reading' series at The Hexagon, Reading.

We regret that Maxim Shostakovich is unwell and has been hospitalised in Moscow with heart problems. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is enormously grateful to Grzegorz Nowak for taking his place at such short notice. The programme remains unchanged.
