STRAVINSKY Symphonies of Wind Instruments (1920)
TCHAIKOVSKY Violin Concerto
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade
Newly appointed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Charles Dutoit leads the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in three very different masterworks from the Russian repertoire. Stravinsky's remarkable 'sounding together' of wind and brass dates from 1920, and is inscribed to the memory of Claude Debussy, who had died two years earlier. This classic of Stravinskyan 'cool' is followed by Tchaikovsky's dazzling Violin Concerto; at one time dismissed as impractical and unplayable, it finds a thrilling exponent in the hands of the great Vadim Repin, whose recent performances have left audiences and critics spellbound.
Scheherazade, a series of musical tales drawn from The Arabian Nights, remains Rimsky-Korsakov's best-loved work. The scoring is masterly, and its heady mix of sumptuous melody and overwhelming orchestral climaxes has served to maintain the universal popularity of the score.
