George Gershwin, the son of Russian-Jewish migrants, was born in Brooklyn and musically self-taught. He knew his way around Tin Pan Alley and, during his short life (1898-1947) was able to cut across musical boundaries. The tunes from his opera Porgy and Bess have entered popular culture, and Al Jolson helped put Gershwin on the map with Swanee. Gershwin also left us some inspired concert music imbued with jazz and swing elements as well as writing numerous pulsating shows for Broadway.
His dazzling gifts as a songwriter will here be brought to life with a medley of hits familiar to all – even if you didn’t know that Gershwin wrote them! Gershwin was a brilliant pianist, too. Rhapsody in Blue is a classic of swing and smoochy melody and will form an integral part of a toe-tapping and brilliantly lively evening directed by and featuring Gershwin devotee, Andrew Litton.
