ROSSINI The Barber of Seville Overture

ELGAR Cello Concerto

MENDELSSOHN Symphony No.3, ‘Scottish’

Meet the artists: FREE pre-concert talk from 6.30pm, presented by Edward Seckerson (Chief Critic, Independent and BBC presenter).

The wit and sparkle of the Overture to Rossini’s ever-popular comic opera The Barber of Seville gets this concert off to an effervescent start. For many music-lovers Elgar’s Cello Concerto has become hugely significant, a one-to-one identification with the composer’s beautiful, intense and stoic music, and a highly personal response to the life-shattering events of the First World War. Julian Lloyd Webber is particularly associated with this eloquent work. Mendelssohn’s time in Scotland with its mists, tempests, landscape and history inspired from him a vivid symphonic portrait that broods and dances simultaneously.
