Although Prokofiev did not complete his Third Piano Concerto until 1921, some of the ideas for it date back to 1913, long before his extended absence from Russia. First performed in Chicago with the composer as soloist, the Concerto successfully fuses Prokofiev's brittle, percussive keyboard style with an intense neo-romantic lyricism, and it remains by far the most popular of his five concerti for the instrument.
When Prokofiev turned to the subject of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in 1934 he and his collaborators actually considered giving the ballet a happy ending, with Romeo arriving in time to find Juliet alive. The electrifying score remains one of Prokofiev's most celebrated compositions, both on stage and in the concert hall. It begins with the dramatic sweep of the ever-popular Montagues and Capulets and culminates in the shattering intensity of the scene at Juliet's tomb.
