GLINKA Ruslan and Ludmila Overture
ELGAR Cello Concerto
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.6, 'Pathétique'

Kick-starting the evening with its rigorous rhythmic patterns, glorious tunes and sparkling energy is Glinka’s uniquely Russian Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to be joined by the 2012 BBC Young Musician, cellist Laura van der Heijden. The young British star takes centre stage for a performance of Elgar’s rich and noble English masterpiece, his Cello Concerto.

From one sensational manuscript to the next, Dvořák’s soaring Symphony No.9, ‘From the New World’, creates a magnificent concert finale, directed by British conductor Michael Seal. Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony was inspired by his travels across America and drew the Romantic era to a powerful close.
