MENDELSSOHN A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture
BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No.5, ‘Emperor’
ELGAR Enigma Variations
The Orchestra will be opening this magnificent season with three great classics. The scurrying sound of fairy feet as they scamper about the stage, is just one of many instrumental effects Mendelssohn uses in his Overture to recreate the mysterious and magical atmosphere of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Beethoven’s wonderful Piano Concerto No.5 is the centrepiece of tonight’s concert. This was Beethoven’s final masterwork for piano; the beauty and tenderness of the music makes it one of the most admired concertos performed and heard in concert halls today. The performance will close with Elgar’s ever popular - and quintessentially English orchestral portraits - Enigma Variations.
