Conductor Dmitry Yablonsky lifts his baton for Shostakovich's Festive Overture, an energetic showpiece full of glorious fanfares and quick-fire melodies. Tchaikovsky's dazzling Violin Concerto was at one time dismissed as being impractical and unplayable. Here it finds a thrilling exponent in the hands of violinist Jack Liebeck, winner of the 2010 Classical BRIT Award for Young British Performer of the Year. The concert closes with Ravel's stunning orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. These extraordinarily vivid musical pictures range from the quiet lyricism of The Old Castle to the shattering sonic splendour of The Great Gate of Kiev.
