MUSSORGSKY, orch. RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Night on the Bare Mountain
RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No.2
SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No.5
Acclaimed American maestro Andrew Litton joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a magnificent programme of Russian masterworks. Mussorgsky's dramatic Night on the Bare Mountain is a musical whirlwind, depicting the folklore tale of the witches' Sabbath. Natasha Paremski, a dynamic young pianist 'with flawless technique and unbeatable energy' (BBC Music Magazine), performs Rachmaninov's intensely passionate Piano Concerto No.2. Rich in romanticism and emotional power, the Concerto’s central theme remains forever associated with the classic film Brief Encounter. Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony is a work full of nobility, lyricism and humour, concluding with a grand and victorious finale. At its 1937 première the Symphony received a lengthy standing ovation and it continues to enthral audiences today as one of Shostakovich’s best-loved orchestral works.
