Royal and Derngate Theatres was formed in October 1999 to manage The Royal Theatre and Derngate as one combined organisation. Before 1999, although both theatres are on adjacent sites and have some physical links front of house, they were managed by separate charitable trusts. However following separate applications for Lottery funding, the Arts Council of England suggested that a joint application might be received more favourably and as part of this process the organisations merged.
The Derngate was opened in 1983. A Northampton Borough Council initiative, the venue was designed by RHWL for multi-purpose use. It can be configured to stage a variety of events including classical concerts, musicals, opera, dance and even 'in the round' events such as snooker tournaments. It has a maximum capacity of 1,500 for classical concerts, with 1200 seats for 'lyric' performances and has been run as a touring theatre since.

By Train

By Bus
Northampton Bus Station is situated on Greyfriars and is approximately a 10-minute walk from the theatre. There are bus stops throughout the Town Centre within a 5-minute walk.

Car Parking
The nearest car parks to the theatre are Albion Place, St John’s Open Air and Multi-storey car parks. The multi-storey car park is open 24 hours a day. These car parks are managed by Northampton Borough Council and there is a charge of 80p for parking after 6.00pm (£2.50 for overnight parking). There are a number of accessible car parking spaces in all of these car parks.
